Oculus Building – Drone Inspection
New York, NY
Project overview
The Oculus is the centerpiece of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in Lower Manhattan, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. This iconic structure features a dramatic steel and glass design resembling a bird in flight.
SKYPYX performed a drone inspection of structural steel connections, the skylight system, and the building's unique architectural wing elements. Drones provided safe access to elevated areas of the complex geometry that would be extremely difficult and costly to reach with traditional scaffolding or lift equipment.
Deliverables
- Structural steel connection photography across the wing elements
- Skylight system condition imagery and documentation
- High-resolution documentation of architectural rib details
- Inspection-ready files for ongoing maintenance planning
- Organized deliverable package with clear file structure
Location & scope
The Oculus is located at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, New York City. This is a restricted airspace and high-security environment that required extensive coordination with the Port Authority, local agencies, and site security. The inspection covered the exterior wing structures, skylight system, and steel rib connections.
