Holland Tunnel – Drone Inspection
New York, NY
Project overview
The Holland Tunnel, opened in 1927, is a historic vehicular tunnel beneath the Hudson River connecting Manhattan with Jersey City, New Jersey. This engineering landmark requires ongoing preservation and rehabilitation efforts to maintain its structural integrity.
SKYPYX performed drone inspections of the ventilation buildings, exterior facades, and approach structures. Drones captured upper-level details of the ventilation towers that would otherwise require extensive scaffolding—providing the preservation team with comprehensive documentation efficiently.
Deliverables
- Ventilation building facade inspection photography
- Architectural detail documentation for preservation review
- Approach structure condition imagery
- Marked-up defect documentation for the engineering team
- Inspection-ready files organized for preservation planning
Location & scope
The Holland Tunnel ventilation buildings are located in dense urban areas of Lower Manhattan and Jersey City, New Jersey. Flight planning required careful coordination around heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic, adjacent buildings, and restricted airspace. The inspection covered both the Manhattan-side and Jersey City-side ventilation buildings, their facades, and surrounding approach structures.
